This incredible footage shows a crash test between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. It was commissioned by the insurance industry to highlight just how far car safety has improved in the fifty years since the industry set up the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In those intervening fifty years, car safety has improved beyond measure, with the introduction of such features as crumple zones, air bags, anti-lock breaking, seat belts and a whole wealth of other features that make surviving a crash much more likely than it was back in the old days.

Check out the video to see just how far the car industry has come in the last fifty years. It’s pretty amazing stuff.
