We all know that sharks pose a threat to those in the water. There have been a myriad of documentaries and films made – not least the monumental Jaws series – showing the dangers that swimmers can face from mega fish like the Great White. However, far fewer people are aware of the viciousness of piranhas, a small fish with sharp teeth and powerful jaws.
The fish, which hunt in packs of around 45,000, will quickly surround any possible food source, including humans, and voraciously rip into their flesh. It recent years, there has been a spate of attacks by piranhas on humans in South America, where the species are found, resulting in several deaths and hundreds of injuries.
The following footage, showing piranhas being fed in a Brazilian river, testifies to just how frightening these creatures are.
They certainly don’t mess around!
