grand prize / grand march
The top trophy at a ball, and the opening procession where the houses make their entrance.
Definitions
The grand prize is the big one. The top trophy and cash at a ball, the win every house is chasing across the night's categories. Take enough categories, dominate enough, and you walk out with the grand prize and the bragging rights that come with it. New houses historically needed grand prizes to even be taken seriously.
The grand march is the opening ceremony of a ball. The houses parade in, name announced, making their grand entrance before the categories kick off. It sets the tone and announces who's in the room. The term goes back to the earliest documented Harlem balls in the 1920s.
