A New Orleans Carnival organisation. Krewes design floats, throw beads, host masked balls and crown royalty — Rex, Zulu, Bacchus, Muses, the lot. Membership runs from old-money invite-only to anyone-with-fifty-bucks.

Origin & Usage
Deliberate archaic respelling of 'crew', coined by the Mistick Krewe of Comus in 1857 to give Carnival societies a mock-medieval flavour. Stuck immediately and now every krewe uses it.
