The toilet. Originally the outdoor lavatory at the bottom of a Tyneside back yard, now used for any loo. Heard in 'gannin' to the netty' — going to the toilet. One of the most recognisable Geordie words going.

Disputed — possibly from Italian 'gabinetti' (cabinets, toilets) via 19th-century travellers, or from English 'necessary' (a Victorian euphemism for outhouse).
