opp
An enemy, a rival, someone on the other side — short for 'opposition'.
Definitions
An enemy or rival — originally a rival gang member in drill lyrics, now diluted to mean basically anyone you're up against. Common in rap, gaming, sports trash talk and friend-group banter.
Used loosely and jokingly for anyone whose taste, team or vibe is incompatible with yours. Low-stakes, often affectionate.
A rival, enemy, or member of an opposing gang. In drill, an opp isn't just someone you don't like — it's someone from the other side of a postcode beef. The word travelled from Chicago's South Side to London estates and now lives everywhere rap does.
Used loosely online to mean anyone who's hating on you or working against your interests. Stripped of the street weight, it became Gen Z shorthand for 'hater' or 'someone with a problem with me'.
opp In A Sentence
Origin & Usage
Rooted in Chicago drill rap in the early 2010s (Chief Keef, Lil Durk era), where 'opps' meant rival gang members. Crossed into general Gen-Z usage through UK drill, TikTok and gaming chat, where it now just means 'people I'm against'.
