turn out

Inside, to 'turn someone out' is to break them — through rape, threats, or sustained pressure — into accepting the role of a 'punk' or 'duck'. Once turned out, the inmate's status on the wing collapses and the label tends to stick across transfers. One of the ugliest verbs in the prison lexicon.

Outside prison, the same phrase is used in pimping subculture to mean coercing a woman into sex work for the first time. Same logic: breaking someone into a role they didn't choose.
