Dealing a massive amount of damage almost instantly, usually a full combo that deletes a squishy target before they can react. Assassins and burst mages live on it, you're dead before the health bar finishes dropping.

As a verb, to burst someone down is to kill them with that quick spike of damage. The opposite of sustained DPS, where damage comes out over time.
