Definitions

1

A natural-casing beef hot dog in a steamed bun, topped with an all-beef, no-bean chili sauce, yellow mustard and a heap of diced raw onion. Detroit eats them at 3am after the bars, usually at a 'coney island' — the local term for the diners that specialise in them (American and Lafayette being the legendary rivals downtown).

“Two coneys, fries, and a Vernors — same as always.”

Short for 'coney island', the diner itself. In metro Detroit, 'let's hit a coney' means the restaurant, not the sandwich.

“There's a coney on every other corner out by Dearborn.”
