Firefighter Assist and Search Team / Rapid Intervention Crew. A dedicated team that stages outside a working fire doing nothing else but waiting to charge in and rescue any firefighter who gets trapped, lost, injured, or runs out of air inside. NFPA 1407 requires one on the scene of every structure fire. FAST is the FDNY/New York name; RIC (or RIT, Rapid Intervention Team) is the term used pretty much everywhere else. Same job, different patch.
